How much is a coffered ceiling?

Coffered ceilings.

I get lots of traffic to my website for the search term "coffered ceilings" (you can see pictures of the finished coffered ceiling in the video and another coffered ceiling on my website here Coffered Ceilings ). I have given estimates for coffered ceilings and I also get phone calls and emails about the cost of a coffered ceiling and people are sometimes surprised by the total estimate.





The coffered ceiling above had 25 individual coffers, that's a lot of molding and millwork and a whole lot of  work cutting miters and coping crown molding.
I've done a a lot of research on where to get coffered ceiling kits and I have found that my prices are much better than the shipped coffered ceiling kits and you still have to install the coffered ceiling kit or hire someone to do it. If you happen to be moving into a new house that is currently being built you would probably get an okay deal on a coffered ceiling, something simple, but then again the home builder is already selling you a house for some ridiculous price!

Recessed panel wainscoting installation in Richmond Virginia.

Over the weekend I began work on some recessed panel wainscoting on the outside of this downstairs half bath (see pic left). It already had three member (piece) crown molding on the wall and ceiling and I knew this would compliment the recessed panel wainscoting beautifully. I decided I was going to use a 1x4 poplar for the styles and rails of the wainscoting and a large base cap molding for the inside of the panels. I purchased the poplar, baseboard, and base cap at http://www.siewers.com/ of Richmond Virginia.

I began by preparing my corners. I cut down the poplar to size then put a 45 degree bevel (miter) on one side using a table saw . Then I glued and clamped each side together with mitre clamps and let it set over night. This will ensure a tight bond that will never come a part.

I removed the baseboard and was going to remove the door casing and install a new thicker door casing so the wainscoting material would not protrude past it but decided that adding a back band molding would achieve the same result without having to remove the door casing. It would also save on material cost.
